What Is Mixed Martial Arts?
Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is one of the fastest growing sports and fastest growing form of Martial Arts in the world. MMA is also known as UFC or Ultimate Fighting that pits two fighters against each other in an eight-sided caged ring. Where they battle it out to see who will be the victor.
In the early days of MMA it was based on style vs style fighting where two combatants representing two different fighting styles (ie: Judo vs Kickboxing) would fight out to see which form of Martial Arts was the best. The Gracies and their fighting style known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu quickly made name for themselves, showing off to the world that their form of Martial Art was something to be reckoned with. MMA is also known as No Holds Barred (NHB) or Vale Tudo which is Portuguese and means "Anything Goes". In those early days there was no rules and strikes to the groin was permitted as well as headbutts. These days there is some rules but they are kept to a minimum and that is only to protect the fighters against serious injury. MMA is much safer than most sports like Rugby, American Football and even Boxing.
Bruce Lee was one of the first pioneers to actually start with Mixed Martial Arts in the 1960's and 1970's, combining different fighting arts to form a style that had the best from all the forms of Martial Arts and that actually worked.
Combining Brazilian Jiu jitsu, Greco Roman Wrestling, Muay Thai, Karate, Sambo, Judo, Boxing and other fighting disciplines, athletes use grappling, striking, clinching, throws and hard kicks to defeat their opponents, thrilling crowds with their mastery of a wide range of fighting techniques. Competitions end when a fighter is knocked unconscious, a technical knockout is called by a referee, or submission when a fighter chooses to "Tap Out" signaling an end to the fight by tapping on the victor's body or on the mat indicating that he has taken enough abuse and pain and does not wish to continue.
Should the fight go to the end without an opponent being knocked out or tapped out, three judges determine the winner based on a 10-point must system.
Fighters will go at each other for three, five minute rounds and the fights can be quite intensive and thrilling, however the referee is always on hand to stop a fight when one man is getting pummelled to the point where he can't defend himself successfully.
Training in MMA demands hours of dedication and practice and will test your body, mind and spirit to it's limits.

"For Every One Hundred Men You Send Us, Ten Should Not Be Here. Eighty Are Nothing But Targets. Nine Of Them Are Real Fighters; We Are Lucky To Have Them, They The Battle Make. Ah, But The One. One Of Them Is A Warrior. And He Will Bring The Others Back". - Heraclictus 500BC
